No one else is going to put you first

Earlier today, I was talking with a client who is writing a memoir about some difficult familiar relations. She was struggling with where to take it next – and frankly if she should even continue. She said “I don’t know If I even would publish this book because I don’t want to air all my family’s dirty laundry. So, then what’s the point of writing it?”

This is so often how we feel about our personal pursuits. If it isn’t FOR someone else, what’s the point? Why take that dance class or learn how to throw pottery or buy that vintage plaid blazer with the really big shoulder pads or explore my sensuality or move into a new home or create that dating profile or learn to meditate or develop a new habit if it’s not going to be beneficial to anyone else? Asked another way “Why put me first?”

It’s a good question and a ridiculous one at the same time. There are plenty of reasons to put you first…the most important is that if you don’t put you first, who will? No one else is going to wake up today and say “My goal today is to make sure that Darla signs up for that pottery class she has been talking about.” I repeat, NO ONE. That is your job. You have this one deliciously juicy, lusciously full life {okay, you may have more but that’s another topic}. Spirit, god, science, the universe, you, your mama {whomever you want to credit} gave it to you. You have no idea when your chapter closes. Don’t waste it. Show up for it. And don’t let anyone take it away from you. For you and for the people in your life. No half-assing it. No messing around. Show up.

Now go write your memoir, take your tightrope walking class, buy the blazer, learn how to fly a plane, and just tell everyone to buzz off. You have you to take care of.
